A quote that arrives within minutes of asking is suspicious for a reason. These are the seven add-on lines that turn a £350 quote into a £620 invoice.

1. Fuel surcharge

Reputable firms include fuel in the quote. If you see a "fuel surcharge — to be confirmed" line, walk away.

2. Stairs and floor levels

Some firms charge per flight above the ground floor. Always disclose your floor — and your destination floor — at quote stage.

3. Parking suspensions

A permit suspension in central London or Cambridge can be £180. Make sure it's included.

4. Packing materials

Boxes and tape are commonly billed at end-of-move. Confirm whether the quote includes them or not.

5. Wait time

If your keys are late, hourly firms charge a "wait fee". Fixed-quote firms absorb the first 60–90 minutes.

6. Dismantle / reassemble

Beds and wardrobes routinely don't fit through doors fully assembled. Fair quotes include this.

7. Insurance excess

Standard cover often has a £250 excess per claim. Worth asking before move day, not after a chip in your dining table.
