Every cubic metre of stuff costs money to move. The cheapest way to lower your removals bill is to own less on move day.

Week 1 — Easy wins

  • Loft and garage
  • Out-of-season clothes
  • Books and DVDs you won't re-read or watch

Week 2 — Furniture

Measure every large item against the new property's rooms. If it doesn't fit, sell or donate now — not on move day.

Week 3 — Kitchen and utility

Three sets of measuring spoons is two too many. Be ruthless.

Week 4 — Paperwork

Shred old bank statements, utility bills and pay slips beyond 6 years.
